Saturday 22nd April saw me making my way down to London to visit Salute 2017 at the Excell Centre in London’d Docklands.
Salute is the country’s largest wargaming show and us run by the South London Warlords wargame club each year. I’ve never been before so this was a first for me. It was also my first time on the Docklands Light Railway. The date coincided with the day people were registering at the Excell centre for the London Marathon which was the day after, so the trains were really busy.
I didn’t really know what to expect. I knew there would be various wargame demonstrations and the place would be full of trade stalls selling their wares. I had saved up a bit of hobby cash to make a few purchases, and something I was keen to look at were the Victrix Roman Legionaries. I’ve never wargamed ancients but have always fancied painting up a Roman army. I have some Greek Hoplites in plastic somewhere in the loft. I probably bought them 30 plus years ago and never got round to painting. I was keen to add something to them.
I’d read that around 7,000 people visit Salute each year, I think 90% of them were in the queue ahead of me as we snaked around the auditorium by the entrance to the exhibition hall.
There were so many people round each of the stands that it was difficult to get near the front for a look, so I spent the first 90 minutes just walking round seeing what stall was where.
I’ll put up more pics in a different post, meanwhile you can see what I managed to come away with in the video below…
